Rio Ferdinand Praises Unai Emery's Tactics After Gunners Draw With Tottenham
EJ|March. 02, 2019
Arsenal manager Unai Emery was heavily criticised pre-match ahead of the north London derby at Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday.
It’s safe to say his team selection which included leaving Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mesut Ozil and Lucas Torreira on the bench caused some confusion.
Arsenal legend Martin Keown admitted to being ‘stunned’ by the decisions but Rio Ferdinand explained post-match that Emery’s tactical approach worked, with the Gunners picking up a point at Wembley and only missing out on all three points after Aubameyang missed a penalty late on.
“From an Arsenal perspective, we criticised Unai Emery a little bit before the game in terms of his team selection with [Pierre-Emerick] Aubameyang not being in the team,” Ferdinand explained on BT Sport.
“He got his tactics today spot on, though. He was a spot-kick away from winning this game. They defended fantastically well throughout the game and were very solid.
“He has been trying to find ways to get this Arsenal team to win games away from home. He was very close today.”
Arsenal missed out on an opportunity to close the gap between themselves and Spurs to one point thanks to the 1-1 draw, but Ferdinand still believes Spurs are in a top-four battle not a title race anymore.
