three ain't easy City must score three goals in second leg says Spurs icon Vinny Samways
Kolawole damilare|April. 10, 2019
TOTTENHAM will go to Etihad and score giving Manchester City a mountain to climb in the Champions League, according to Vinny Samways.
Spurs head to Manchester next week with a vital 1-0 lead from the first leg .
And keeping a clean sheet, denying Pep Guardiola’s side a precious away goal like Liverpool did last season leaves City with it all to do in the return leg.
Samways, who spent eight years at White Hart Lane exclusively told SunSport: “I thought Spurs were excellent and full value for their win.
“Ok you can talk about the early penalty miss, but overall, Spurs created the better opportunities.
“I expect them to go to the Etihad and score, so City will have to score at least three to get through.
“There aren’t many places Tottenham can’t go to and score, they’re not the type of team to sit back on a one-goal lead, it’s not in their make-up.
“Before the game, If you would have offered Pochettino a 1-0 lead going up to the Etihad for the second leg, I think he would have taken it.”
I was surprised by Guardiola’s team selection - he’s got a wonderful squad but he left out Kevin De Bruyne and Leroy Sane. Vinny Samways
The Premier League Champions were nowhere near their best in north London, but Guardiola raised a few eyebrows with his starting line-up.
Samways continued: “I was surprised by Guardiola’s team selection - he’s got a wonderful squad but he left out Kevin De Bruyne and Leroy Sane.
“I thought he would have gone there to at least nick a goal, but take nothing away from Spurs who nullified them.”
Spurs could be without Harry Kane for the rest of the season after suffering another ankle injury after his clash with England team-mate Fabian Delph .
Son scored the only goal of the game and Samways insists the South Korean will be the man to step up to the plate in the absence of their top scorer.
Samways added: “Son is amazing, he’s the one who has stepped up every time Kane has been out.
“And in big games he always delivers, he’s been a fantastic signing.”
Beating City made it two out of two wins in Spurs’ new £1billion stadium.
And despite the huge outlay off the pitch, Samways who won the FA Cup with Spurs in 1991 has called on chairman Daniel Levy to spend big to improve Mauricio Pochettino’s squad so they can start winning silverware.
He added: “Tottenham need to go on a start winning trophies, top four is fundamental in terms of finances.
“But they must regroup in the summer and invest in the squad.
“Spurs have some fantastic players but they must invest or they could get left behind as everyone else will be spending big money in the summer.”
