UPDATED: Lawan Emerges Senate President After Defeating Ndume

Senator Ahmed Lawan has emerged Nigeria’s new Senate President after he defeated his only rival, Senator Ali Ndume.
The election which was held on Tuesday during the first session of the 9th Senate saw Lawan score 79 votes with his challenger, Senator Ndume, scoring 28 votes
Going into Tuesday’s election, former Senate Leader, Mr. Lawan is the favoured candidate of the All Progressives Congress, APC, while Senator Ndume is favoured by the Peoples’ Democratic Party, PDP, despite belonging to APC.
Senator Lawan was nominated in a motion by Senator Yahaya Abdullahi and seconded by Adeola Olamilaken of Lagos West.
