Extinction Rebellion: 5 protests planned in London this weekend

Promise

Oct. 11, 2019

Extinction Rebellion has staged protests across the world over the past week.
Climate Change protest group Extinction Rebellion is planning five more events in London this weekend.
Extinction Rebellion, known simply as XR, has stepped up its protests this week. There have been worldwide demonstrations as part of XR's October Rebellion plan to push the issue of climate change to the forefront of the media's attention.
With acts of mass civil disobedience, XR has attracted support and criticism in seemingly equal measure. The controversial methods used by the group are deemed necessary by many protesters, who are willing to risk being arrested to demonstrate how serious the climate change issue has become.
This weekend, five more events are planned in the United Kingdom's capital. Here are the five XR events planned on Saturday 12 October and Sunday 13 October, according to the organisation's website .
'Trade Unionists join the Rebellion'
On Saturday, between 12:30 and 15:30, trade unionists will take to the streets of London for a protest. XR is calling on trade unionists to show their famed solidarity towards those fighting against an oppressive regime. The rally will take place in Trafalgar Square.
Noting that many trade unionists were sympathetic towards the climate strike, XR said : " Now, it’s time to recognise the scale of the environmental catastrophe and get involved. "
'Pop-up forest performance'
XR has planned a slightly different protest in East London. In Waltham Forest - the borough of culture with an apt slogan of 'Welcome to the Forest' - there will be a forest performance on Saturday afternoon.
On the Facebook group, XR said : " As part of a day of activities celebrating trees we'll be creating a Pop-up Forest performance to remind the Government that we need to Act Now with nature based solutions. " But there is rain forecast for the event, which takes place between 13:30 and 15:30, and only seven people have confirmed they are going on Facebook.
'There is strength in grief'
In Marble Arch on Saturday, between 14:00 and 16:00, there will be a mock funeral as XR protesters unite in their "grief" at the climate emergency. Attendees are encouraged to gather at 13:30 for a 14:00 start and to wear black, white and pink.
There is a busy schedule for the march, including a "jazz-funeral band", flags, banners and an orchestra greeting the protest when it concludes in Russell Square. XR said : " Express yourself in accordance to the mourning rituals of your culture. Start in nature, end in nature. We unite in grief, rage and love for life on Earth. "
'Women's Resistance for Climate Action'
There is another march on Saturday. At 14:00, Mothers Rise Up is hosting a march from St James' Park to Russell Square. Then, the rally continues at SOAS as a celebration for Indigenous People's Day. This event finishes at around 20:00.
XR said : " Women, the primary carers everywhere, have been leading the resistance to climate change, protecting precious land from mining, deforestation, water poisoning and cash crops. "
'The Beacon'
For the second successive Sunday, XR is lighting 'The Beacon' in the only protest planned in London. It is an all-day event, commencing at 07:30 and finishing at 23:00. This is a repeat of last Sunday's protest - where a couple got married.
The march starts at 'Trafalgar Square’s Burning Earth' and heads in the direction of 'The Beacon' at Westminster Bridge. XR said : It’s time to light The Beacon, to shine a light on the climate emergency, and guide our planet to safe harbour. Because if we ACT NOW, we can limit the destruction faced by a total climate catastrophe.
