Sergio Busquets still has a key role to play for Barcelona
Oct. 12, 2019
Despite the Spanish-based newspapers labeling Sergio Busquets as a player that is no longer ‘untouchable’ for head coach Ernesto Valverde, I am here to remind you of the importance of the midfielder. Busquets is the heart and engine of this team. When he plays well, Barca play well. He has eyes in the back of his head and his vision and incredible decision-making is something that cannot be taught, it is innate and his presence is needed in every game for the team to succeed.
Valverde looks to be experimenting with his midfield this season, testing out the water with his large pool of midfielders and the results have left Busquets on the bench for five matches. It has been the first time in the last three seasons that the 31-year-old has been left on the sidelines in two games in which he never played a single minute. In fact, curiously enough, in those two fixtures in which Busquets did not participate, Barcelona fell to defeat: first at San Mames (1-0) and then the 2-0 beating at the hands of Granada at Los Carmenes.
El Txingurri is giving the likes of Arthur Melo and Arturo Vidal minutes in the center of the field and both players are delivering and meeting expectations, yet the game is just different without Busquets. He is the main contributing factor of driving the team forward and also leads the pack when it comes to making recuperations and stealing the ball from opponents.
Sergio has mastered creating space and the timing in doing so. There is only one Busquets in this footballing world and Barcelona need to take advantage of the tall, and skinny genius sitting on their bench.
