REPORT: Heat Have Been Trying To Trade Dion Waiters All Year But Garners Zero Interest
Oct. 21, 2019
In wake of the news that the Miami Heat have decided to suspend veteran guard Dion Waiters for their season opener against the Memphis Grizzlies , there are now reports that the team has been trying to trade him for almost an entire year.
According to the rumors, however, nobody seems to be interested in giving away anything in exchange for his services.
The Heat suspended Waiters for what is being reported as “unprofessional conduct.” Apparently, he aimed a fit of anger at coach Erik Spoelstra on the bench during the team’s final preseason game against the Houston Rockets .
According to an anonymous GM, Miami has been trying to ship Waiters since December last year (via Heavy.com).
“They’ve been trying to trade him since last Christmas. No one was trying to take him on then. After this kind of thing, it would be really hard to take him on now,” the GM said. “He has had this kind of junk attached to him just about his whole career.”
Moreover, Waiters’ relationship with Spoelstra might be damaged at this point, as he reportedly suggested that the veteran coach only won two championships because he had LeBron James , Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh. The disgruntled guard is also liking comments on social media about him being traded or waived by the Heat.
Waiters still has two years left on his contract worth more than $12 million per year. If this was any other player who averages 12-14 points per game, someone might’ve been interested in acquiring him. However, since Dion has earned a reputation as a locker room problem, it seems like he’s not going anywhere this season.
