A grandmother has died after she was allegedly shot in the chest by her husband outside their family home.
Gail Kelsey, 67, died on Friday night after her 72-year-old husband Richard allegedly used a rifle to shoot her outside their house in Chambers Flat, south of Brisbane .
After the tragedy, Kelsey allegedly called triple zero to report the shooting and sat on the front step of his house without a shirt on until officers arrived.
Despite desperate attempts of paramedics to save Mrs Kelsey, she died at the scene.
Detective Inspector Tony Lohmann said the husband was 'distraught' but 'cooperative' with officers when they arrived at the home.
'(It's) a shock to everybody,' he said, The Courier Mail reported.
Mrs Kelsey's death rattled the community, with many neighbours saying they were a quiet couple who had been married for years.
'They were just a quiet old couple, I've never heard yelling come out of there,' one resident said.
'The absolutely sad thing about this is a mother has lost her life and he has lost his life,' another neighbour said.
It's understood Kelsey was seen tending to the lawn hours before the shooting.
The couple were also known to host regular Christmas parties in the street with Kelsey dressing up as Santa Claus and his wife cooking food for the neighbourhood.
The 72-year-old was a licensed gun holder and was not known to police.
Kelsey has been charged with murder and is due to appear in Beenleigh Magistrates Court on Monday.
