Blaze at the double in Hockey One finales
Nov. 11, 2019
Brisbane Blaze will feature in both the men's and women's final of the inaugural Hockey One competition, to be played as a double-header in Melbourne on Saturday.
HC Melbourne earned hosting rights as the top women's team, but did it the hard way after scraping past Canberra Chill in a shootout on Sunday.
Neither side could score in regular time, before Melbourne's Hockeyroos 'keeper Rachael Lynch amazingly saved all five shoot-out attempts to see them through.
Fitzpatrick sisters Kendra and Madison both scored in Brisbane's 3-0 defeat of Adelaide in Brisbane on Saturday.
The Blaze men thumped Tassie Tigers 7-1 to set up a rematch with the unbeaten NSW Pride.
The Pride, stacked with Kookaburras, scored five goals in the third quarter to beat HC Melbourne 6-2 in their semi-final.
They will start heavy favourites against a Blaze team they beat 5-0 in Brisbane a fortnight ago.
Hockey One general manager Tony Dodemaide said the decision to rotate grand final hosting rights yearly between the top-ranked men's and women's team - starting with women this year - was a nod to the "true gender equality" of the sport.
