Jurgen Klopp press conference: Liverpool manager on Salah at the Olympics, the Premier League winter break, and Atletico Madrid

Florence

Feb. 14, 2020

Mohamed Salah has not been confirmed to play at this summer’s Olympics yet, Jurgen Klopp revealed on Friday.
The superstar forward is expected to be one of three overage players Egypt select for their Olympics campaign later this year, with the nation’s Under-23s manager name-checking him when discussing a possible squad selection.
Speaking earlier this week, Shawky Gharib said: “Out of the three senior players we’ll call up, Salah is the only one we’re settled on so far because he’s simply one of the top three players in the world.”
Should Salah feature at the summer tournament he would miss Liverpool’s entire pre-season – and possibly the opening games of the 2020/21 Premier League campaign also.
The gold medal match is scheduled for August 8, which is the same weekend as the opening gameweek of the new season.
Making it clear he does not want to lose one of his key players, Klopp did reveal no final decision has been made so far.
“No decision,” said Klopp on Salah. “Like always, it is clear, do I want to lose him? Of course not.
“We have to consider different things. I will speak with Mo and we are clear what we want. We need more info and no one has contacted us so far.
“We cannot discuss it as we don’t know too much yet. We will speak and we will see.”
Klopp also discussed other topics during his press conference, and you can read the best bits, below…
On title races while Borussia Dortmund manager
“I’ve no clue how Dortmund title run-in felt now. Surprising, intense… people ask silly questions!
“If you want to be a success you need to be consistent. Nothing is decided yet. Nicest problem we can have.”
On Norwich match
“We are before the Norwich game and question two or three and they haven’t been mentioned. We have not spoken about anything else, we have prepared for this game.
“It is the most important game of our lives. People think it will be easy, it won’t.
“This league is so strong but I really admire their principles. This game [in August] is a good example for their season, good football, super coaching, you can see it all.
“They caused 95 per cent of teams problems. This club really sticks together and in a good moment.”
On winter break
“It’s a pity we have to explain how useful a week off is. Some used it for warm weather camps, but we sent them all over the world.
“We wanted them to rest. It’s about using this time which is a rest and recovery. A lot of [good] things have happened this week.
“We cannot lose a lot in this week off but we can gain a lot and that is why it is so important for us.”
On his favourite moment at Liverpool
“The Champions League final – it ended in the most beautiful way. I will never forget it. Only thing I think about is football, so that. First final we won, hopefully not the last.”
Signing Jadon Sancho could help Liverpool dominate the Premier League for years, says Jason Cundy
On Daniel Farke
“Nobody has questioned Daniel Farke because he is a super coach. I was in a similar position at Mainz. You need a plan for tomorrow, next few months and next few years, it looks like they have that.
“We have to think about it and it was a warning for us at the time.”
On Atletico Madrid
“Sometimes when you aren’t in a good moment, Champions League can be a holiday. We are not in that situation.
“We have one of the most difficult teams to play in Atletico but it is not my problem in the moment. From Monday we will be in a Champions League mode, if you like.”
On Liverpool Under-23s beating Shrewsbury in the FA Cup
“Really happy for the boys. They all enjoyed it like crazy, they loved it. Sensational crowd, sold out, creating that atmosphere showed what a wonderful club we are.
“I expected a good game and they did it. We deserved to win, it was really cool.”
On West Ham vs Man City being postponed
“The winter weather, nobody can change. Ours was never a stand against the FA Cup, we just decided a winter break must be a break.
“People always say ‘yes, they earn a lot…’ but we have to be 100,000 per cent in these moment. I just hope a solution is found to solve this.
“You cannot please everyone. You have to think a little bit more than just play games. It’s what we tried to do to discuss things a bit more. We just have to make sure in between [games] there is time for a little nap.”
