Over 300 Houses Flooded In Babati District Due To Heavy Rains
Feb. 15, 2020
More than 300 houses in Babati District, Manyara Region have been surrounded by water and others have collapsed due to the ongoing heavy rains in the area.
This was revealed on Monday by the Babati District Commissioner Elizabeth Kitundu when speaking to this paper in her office on the effects of the rains and how the government was responding to them.
Kitundu said four people have died after they were swept away by flood water, including a primary school student who was looking for his shoe that had fallen into an abyss.
She said a total of 342 houses have been surrounded by flood water while 54 collapsed, and adding that 17 had their roofs blown away by winds.
She said one of the reasons that exacerbated the situation is a result of environmental destruction by the wananchi – people’s habit of cutting down trees whose logs end in blocking culverts.
