Jamie Caragher Tells Klopp What He Needs To Do To Beat Atletico
March. 11, 2020
Jamie Carragher has laid out how Liverpool should play against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night as they look to overturn the 1-0 deficit from the first leg of their Champions League last 16 tie.
The Reds were downed by a Saul Niguez goal in the Spanish capital three weeks ago and are still very much alive in the tie ahead of the return leg at Anfield.
Carragher believes he knows what must be done, and has set out a plan for Jurgen Klopp’s side to follow and take them into the last eight.
‘You’ve got to move the ball fast in a game like this,’ said Carragher. When you get the opportunity to really attack Atletico you’ve got to go for it and that means taking risks. You might lose the ball more than normal in trying to force it but it’s about reacting to situations and not allowing them to get organised with 11 men behind the ball.
‘Atletico won’t commit many players forward but on the rare occasions they do have two or three caught upfield, you need to turn defence into attack quickly. ‘As soon as the goalkeeper catches it, he needs to be looking to get Liverpool flying at them.’
The Reds finished the first leg in Spain with 73% possession, and while they unleashed eight attempts on goal, not a single one troubled goalkeeper Jan Oblak.
