Liverpool have been waiting 30 years to win a league title and they are about to end that drought in spectacular style – even if coronavirus has delayed their crowning.
A whole generation of fans have not seen them win the league, with the number one spot evading their grasp on several occasions.
You have the infamous Steven Gerrard slip in 2013/14 and the nine-point lead lost last season, as well as other near misses.
At times it seemed like they would never get that elusive first Premier League title, but that wait is finally set to be over.
Should Manchester City fail to beat Chelsea tonight, the title will be Liverpool’s at last.
And how will those Liverpool players react when they are crowned champions? One person who knows exactly what they will be feeling is Ray Houghton.
Houghton won it twice in 1987/88 and 1989/90 – the last time the Merseyside club finished top of the table.
“It’s the culmination of a season of hard work. That’s essentially it,” Houghton told talkSPORT. “Your goal at the start of the season, as a club, is to go and win the league.
“Last season they got so close with the 30 wins, seven draws and one defeat, you aren’t going to get much closer than that, and they were pipped at the post by Manchester City.
“To come out with the focus this season and to get where they are is remarkable. It’s phenomenal.
