Human rights watchdog, Amnesty International (AI) has accused the Nigerian government of empowering the Special Antirobbery Squad (SARS) to maltreat Nigerians. This was contained in its reports titled "Time to end Impunity, Amnesty International documents at least 82 cases of torture, ill-treatment and extra-judicial execution by SARS between January 2017 and May 2020.’'
PM News reports that the organisation argues that torture and maltreatment of Nigerians still go on despite the government passing the 2017 anti-torture bill. It also accused SARS of extorting and exploiting Nigerians when they should be safeguarding Nigerians' rights.

AI said that the Nigerian government has enabled SARS to continue maltreating Nigerians because it has failed to prosecute them and not holding them accountable. Over the years, Nigerians have staged a lot of campaigns calling for the dissolution of SARS.
In a statement issued by the media manager of AI in Nigeria, Isa Sanusi, he said,  “The Nigerian authorities have failed to prosecute a single officer from the notorious Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS), despite anti-torture legislation passed in 2017 and evidence that its members continue to use torture and other ill-treatment to execute, punish and extract information from suspects.”
