'Raising Men' Charity Teaches Teens To Help Veterans & Elderly
Jul 14, 2020
Raising Men Lawn Care Service is a charity that helps people who can't care for their yards. Kids and teens across the U.S. mow lawns for the elderly, disabled, single parents and veterans.
On Saturday, July 11, Rodney Smith Jr., the founder of Raising Men tweeted, "Hello NM. Just passing thru your beautiful state. I’m headed to St. George,UT, Lebanon,OR & Dallas,OR. 3 kids have completed our 50 Yard Challenge. It will take 3-4 days to get to OR (43hr/2,729 miles) . See you again soon."
The day before he had tweeted from Oklahoma where he had given a new lawn mower , week whacker and leaf blower to Brendon who had mowed 50 lawns to complete the challenge.
Southwest the Magazine tells Smith's story. He first learned to mow lawns with his father when he was a kid in Bermuda. Later, as a college senior at Alabama A&M, he was driving around when he saw an older man mowing his lawn in extreme heat. Smith stopped his car, got out and helped the man finish mowing the lawn. That's how he got the idea to help people by caring for their yards. He decided that it was an excellent opportunity to teach teens to be good neighbors .
On the website for Raising Men , it's easy to see that the charity's idea is simple: mow lawns for people who can't do it themselves and get young people involved in their communities. For anyone who needs help with his or her lawn, requesting the service is straightforward. Anyone who lives near Huntsville, Alabama, or Laredo, Texas can just send a text or fill out the online form. In other areas of the country, it's up to the kids and teens involved with the organization to reach out to people who might need help with their yards.
