Sometime in 2018, TVC presenter, Morayo Afolabi Brown made a statement on her morning show 'Your View' about her husband that went viral.
In one of the morning show, there was a discussion about s3xual abuses carried out on little girls by their fathers and Morayo, who is the daughter of the late activist, Alao Aka-Bashorun, made the statement she trust her husband but won't take chances by allowing him to bathe their daughter.
The statement was posted on TVC official handle on twitter. The tweets read;
“I actually trust my husband but I’m just being careful because people that have experienced this kind of situation, also trusted their husbands, and yet, it happened”.
"I absolutely trust my husband but I won’t take chances and have him bathe my daughter, because whether we like it or not, there is something flying in the air these days that is encouraging imbalance and immoralities. ~ @moakabash #YourViewTVC"
After she made the statement, it went viral on social media with a lot of negative comments and backlash instead. Some were of the opinion that her statement insinuated that her husband is a pervert and can't be trusted with their daughter.
In spite of negative reactions that immediately trailed her statement, the TV presenter insisted that she was not wrong.
In a video posted on Instagram, she said her husband was not a pedophile, but “a responsible decent man” who “can never do anything to hurt any of his children.”
She, however, doubled down by saying she was speaking for women who keep quiet despite knowing their husbands are s3xually abusing their daughters.
“So understand this, there are women who have used their life to vouch that their husbands would never abuse their daughters yet we see it happen. Let’s make it easy for those women to speak up. Let’s make it easy for girls to speak up about their abusers, even if it’s their father!” she added in the caption to the video.
This further made the issue worse for her as social media users attacked her for making an example out of her husband and condemning her for publicly embarrassing her husband. A reverend on Instagram went as far as laying a curse on her husband.
Morayo had to apologise to her husband in tears during the live recording of the morning show.
She said;
“The last 24 hours have been tougher than I expected, my sincere apologies to my husband, I love, trust, and respect you! It was an error and I’m really sorry.
“It was not my intention. I love, trust, and respect you. It was a slip.
“I have learnt my lesson. You do not deserve all the horrible things people have said about you. I’m doing this on TV and I would do it again.”
Mr. Femi Afolabi-Brown,  Morayo's husband who is a lawyer and a businessman stepped in to rescue himself and his wife from the claws of social media commentators.
While reacting to the issue late Friday night after his wife apologised on live TV, Mr. Afolabi-Brown said,
“You need not fret about what my wife said on TV. My wife never in any way suggested I was a child molester. She stated her trust in her husband, then said she wouldn’t allow her husband bath her daughters. Then the most negative of souls twisted her statements and ran with it. But if you notice, the enlightened ones among the commenters understood her message and agreed with her".
“Well, here is my take. I tell my daughters never to let any man put them on his laps, or touch them in certain places, or hold them in certain ways, or even see their nakedness. I personally extended those rules to myself to reinforce the teaching. That is the modus operandi I have chosen in raising my own daughters. My wife merely spoke on TV as if she made those rules. Her mistake".
“In a nutshell, as long as my wife or a female person is available, I shall never bath any of my daughters. Why should I, for God’s sake? Others can be doing that in their own houses, but not in my house.”
In a recent interview with Guardian, Morayo was taken back to the controversial statement she made about the issue of girl-child molestation. When asked how she felt at the time, she said;
"Personally, I accept that I spoke carelessly and loosely. However, the point I was trying to get at was very valid. I wasn’t hurt because I knew no one was above mistakes but what was most painful was how an innocent good man, my husband, was portrayed. That hurt to the depth of my soul. I thank God that gave him the strength to pull through it".
Morayo Afolabi-Brown is a TV Host and daughter of the late Nigeria Bar Association chief, Alao Aka-Bashorun. She was the deputy director of programmes at TVC before she resigned in May 2019 and host of popular breakfast show ‘Your View’ with cerebral ladies.
