Coronavirus Can't Survive Where There's God: President Magufuli Said
Aug 3, 2020
President Magufuli has praised Tanzanians for their persistent prayers and belief in God which he said had helped keep the coronavirus pandemic out of their territory. Speaking on Saturday, August 1, Magufuli said were it not for steadfast prayers from Tanzanians, then the pandemic would have unleashed its wrath on them just like it had done in other countries.
According to Magufuli, citizens in Tanzania were solely depended on divine intervention in keeping the disease at bay; not masks and social distancing as other countries that have badly been hit by the virus were doing.
"Today we are here, crowded as usual. There is no one with coronavirus. Let us celebrate our God for his gift of healing. Coronavirus can not survive where there is God and prayer. You have involved God in everything. Both Muslims and Christians have been praying.
I want to assure you that there is no other reason why coronavirus has not terrorised us apart from the grace of God. We took all our troubles to God. You are all aware that in other countries people are dying of this disease whereas here we are safe and without masks," he added
The president's remarks came at a time when the rate of infections in its sister country Kenya and other countries in Africa was rising exponentially. Magufuli has, however, come under scathing criticism from a section of leaders across the continent who have accused him of handling the pandemic in a casual manner. This was after he stopped the regulars updates on the disease in the country in late April 2020. The last official figures showed that the country had 509 cases which included 21 deaths and 183 recoveries.
