Kipchoge To Participate In Elite-only Race As London Mass Marathon To Be Cancelled
Aug 6, 2020
The British media reported on Thursday that this year’s edition of the London Marathon will only involve the elite race, while the mass race is cancelled. Covid-19 has led to the cancellation of mass participation. The elite-only race scheduled for October 4th will be featuring Eliud Kipchoge and Kenenisa Bekele. The race happens on a short loop on a fan-restricted circuit.
The mass race usually attracts around 40,000 runners and millions of pounds are usually raised for charity. It was originally postponed from April however the ongoing trends of Covid-19 cases has made it impossible to hold the race. Hundreds of thousands of fans usually line up on the route through central London and this would increase the risk of infections.
Hugh Brasher, the raced director still had hopes of pushing through with the race and had said an official decision would be made by August 7th. The Boston, Berlin, New York and Chicago marathons have all already been cancelled.
There are plans to hold the elite-only race on a multi-lap course in and around a central London park. There will be controlled access and limited number of fans. The race will be headlined by the only two men to have gone under two hours, two minutes for the marathon.
