Arsenal fan gets in HEATED debate with talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham as Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signs new contract
Sept. 15, 2020
Life is good if you’re an Arsenal fan. Top of the Premier League (even if it’s after matchday one), Mikel Arteta building something promising and now the news they’ve wanted all summer.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has finally signed a new contract, ending any speculation that he’ll leave on a free transfer next summer.
The deal sees the captain, 31, become Arsenal’s highest-paid player as he’s expected to pocket £60million over the next three years.
Gunners fans have been rejoicing at the news that their best player has committed his future to the club.
However, talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham doesn’t think Gooners should be getting too carried away with the news.
The Drivetime host said: “He’s come out and said he wants to become an Arsenal legend, which is a bit weird I think.
“Of all your ambitions, surely you should be saying, especially at his age, ‘I want to win the Champions League or the Premier League’.
“Being an Arsenal legend? You’ve got a lot of work to do if you’re getting anywhere near the Tony Adams/Thierry Henry levels.
“It’s going to be an extraordinary couple of years for Aubameyang. In his full seasons, he’s finished fifth and eighth. He’s firing the goals but not firing them in any particular direction.
“Forgive me for not being OTT like some Arsenal fans are being right now. It’s positive news but there are a lot of other things that need to be in place for this to be something special.
“As Goughie rightly said, NOBODY else was willing to pay Aubameyang what Arsenal are paying him. What does that tell you? You can’t ignore that fact.”
Our Ade has touched the nerves of a few Arsenal fans over the years and he got into a lively debate with Gooner Ashley on the Aubameyang news.
Arsenal fan has run-in with Adrian Durham as talkSPORT hosts voices doubts about Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang signing a new contract
An angry Ashley said: “I just don’t get what your problem with Arsenal is mate. We could buy 11 Ronaldo’s and you’d still slate us.
“I’m not getting carried away, saying ‘we’re going to win the league’ or anything like that but I do agree with Goughie when he says we do have a chance of getting into the top four.
“Now, if you own a football club and it costs you £400,000-a-week for Aubameyang’s new contract, over the course of three years that’s just over £60million. Do you not get £50milion for getting into the Champions League quarter-final stage? To me, that’s money well spent if that happens in the next three years.”
However, Ade was quick to point out that Arsenal getting into the last eight of the Champions League is one big ‘if’ and said Ashley should also take into account that the club are understood to be paying huge wages to the likes of Mesut Ozil (£350,000-a-week) and summer signing Willian (£220,000-a-week).
Adrian added: “If you put together Aubameyang’s wage, Ozil’s wage, Willian’s wage weekly, you’re getting up towards £1million-a-week.
“How on earth can any club sustain that when fans aren’t coming into the ground? Are you not in any way bothered about the situation?”
