Donny Van de Beek slams Man Utd teammates after losing debut vs Crystal Palace
Sep 19, 2020
Donny Van de Beek scored on his Manchester United debut but was left disappointed as the Red Devils were beaten 3-1 by Crystal Palace in a performance he described as ‘not good enough’.
The Dutchman came off the bench in the 67th minute at Old Trafford and scored 13 minutes later, but it was not enough to rescue United from being 2-0 and then 3-1 down.
It was a very disappointing display from the United team as they were roundly outplayed by the Eagles, who secured three points with a goal from Andros Townsend and two from Wilfried Zaha.
Van de Beek certainly cannot be blamed for the below-par performance, having only playing just over 20 minutes of the match, but he was happy to blast his teammates after the defeat.
The 23-year-old felt the tempo of the match was too slow and the team performance was unacceptable.
‘That was not good enough today,’ Van de Beek told MUTV. ‘Last week in training, it looked really good. There was lots of quality and we played fast but today we played too slowly.
‘First match for the club, a day you want to win. It doesn’t matter how, you want to win and I’m really disappointed that we lost 3-1 at home, that’s really bad.
‘I think against an opponent like Crystal Palace you need to speed up the game to create something. That was not good enough.’
It was United’s first Premier League game of the season, while Palace beat Southampton 1-0 last weekend. Along with differing pre-season schedules, United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer feels it was clear his side were less sharp.
