Taupō Mayor rolls out welcome mat while imploring continued vigilance
Sep 24, 2020
A scare relating to the further spread of Covid-19 is the last thing tourist towns like Taupō need, say businesses.
A number of hospitality providers Stuff spoke to were hoping the visit of a potentially active case over the weekend of September 18-20 did not result in any change of alert levels or a reduction in people’s willingness to get out and about as school holidays loom.
Like other eateries and bars in town, Replete Café owners Chris and Kathy Johnston noted the upswing after the initial lockdown had restored confidence, with businesses reporting higher turnover than at the same time in a non-covid year.
Said one restaurant manager of business in June: “It was like New Year’s Eve several times over. We didn’t actually know we could get that many people through.”
Toi Te Ora Public Health reported on Thursday that an Auckland family of three confirmed with Covid-19 travelled from Auckland to Taupō on the weekend of September 18-20 and visited a number of public places in the district.
This was before they had symptoms, but they may have been infectious at the time, Toi Te Ora said.
Concerns possibly active cases had visited would further feed into the uncertainty that followed the second lockdown, said a number of business owners.
“All of our decisions are quite prudent now,” said Kathy.
