6 Styling Tricks To Help You Hit That ’90s High Note Courtesy Of Sportmax
Sept. 25, 2020
Romy Schneider and Walt Whitman are an unusual pairing, but they found themselves alongside each other on the Sportmax moodboard for spring/summer 2021 . Their juxtaposition engendered an ethereal take on sensuality – all those see-through layers and catwalk lights creating a modern version of “the divine nimbus”, as Whitman termed it – in the clothes that streamed out before a socially distanced audience at the Triennale di Milano, the popular art museum in the city. Overwhelmingly, however, the styling references pointed to a familiar blend of sport-inflected minimalism that is enjoying its biggest resurgence yet on the catwalks: the’90s.
The tie-dye tops and midriff-flossing beloved of American cool girls Bella Hadid and Hailey Bieber were out in force, and there was some oversized tailoring in pristine cream (long-line, with very long sleeves), in spearmint satin and in sensible pinstripes that would equally appeal to twentysomethings seeking confidence-boosting outfits. Sheer, floor-sweeping knitted dresses in sludgy brown and pale yellow – maxi dresses are another thing you can expect to see much more of next season – also looked suitably effortless. How to put it all together? There were some key details to note. Here, six styling tricks from the Sportmax runway to help you hit that ’90s high note.
