Rail Workers Build Secret Luxury 'Man Cave' Under Railway Station
Sept. 25, 2020
Three railroad workers were suspending for building a secret ‘man cave’ under New York’s iconic Grand Central Station complete with a huge TV and cold beer. It was revealed on Thursday that the workers had turned outfitted the storage room with a television, a refrigerator, a microwave, and a futon couch, officials said.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority received an anonymous tip in February that alleged employees were sneaking down there to ‘hang out and get drunk and party.’ There is a picture of an open beer container that is sitting on the side of a refrigerator, suggesting that the illicit man cave had indeed hosted some boozy antics.
When investigators found, they saw that wooden cabinets were designed to hide the TV and futon, the report said. The space was said to be a fire hazard because rescue workers wouldn’t be able to find a secret room, officials said.
MTA Inspector General Carolyn Pokorny said in a news release that the workers, who have not been named, were living out a New York fantasy. ‘Many a New Yorker has fantasized about kicking back with a cold beer in a prime piece of Manhattan real estate — especially one this close to good transportation,’ she said. ‘But few would have the chutzpah to commandeer a secret room beneath Grand Central Terminal.’
It is not clear if the employees used the ‘man cave’ while on the job, but it does appear likely. The workers, a wireman, a carpenter foreman, and an electrical foreman, were suspended without pay. Managers said they were unaware of the room’s existence, according to the investigation.
Before Covid-19, Grand Central Terminal was one of the world’s most visited tourist attractions, with over 20 million visitors in 2018. The station’s iconic concourse, which was saved from destruction by former First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis in 1978, has also been seen in numerous Hollywood movies and television shows. It covers 48 acres and has 44 platforms, more than any other railroad station in the world.
