Report: CDC director wanted to extend no-sail order for cruises into 2021 but was overruled
Sep 30, 2020
A push to extend the “no-sail order” for cruise ships into next year was overruled Tuesday, according to a report from Axios .
Robert Redfield, the director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, wanted to keep the order in place until February, according to two sources with direct knowledge of the conversation Tuesday in the White House Situation Room told Axios.
Public health officials say the move to lift the ban earlier is politically motivated, especially because of the cruise ship industry’s economic presence in Florida, Axios reported.
Cruise lines voluntarily canceled trips through Oct. 31, but many would like to resume sailings in the United States, Mexico and the Caribbean before the end of the year.
The no-sail order was to expire on Wednesday. The Trump administration’s coronavirus task force plans to extend it until Oct. 31, Axios reported.
