She told the mag that when Donald announced on the Larry King Live show in 1999 that he was thinking of running for office, the couple knew it wasn’t the right time.
“We knew it wasn’t the time,” she said, according to the Daily Mail . “But I did know that if and when he ran, he would win.”
Tatler teases the rare interview with Melania on its cover with the headline, “The final days of the First Lady? Melania talks to Tatler.”
She also opened up about feeling most proud of how the Trump administration has tackled the opioid epidemic.
“We have to take away the stigma and shame that comes with addiction and treat it as an illness,” she said. “I’m proud of the strides and results this administration has made, resulting in saved lives.”
Melania, 50, made her stance on economics clear, saying, “I can tell you that I believe in free-market capitalism.”
Born Melanija Knavs in Sevnica, Slovenia, the first lady recalled her happy childhood in the small industrial town.
“I grew up with a beautiful family and had a wonderful childhood,” she said. “My mother and father taught us the importance of education, hard work, and family.”
