Manchester United are reportedly ready to activate Dayot Upamecano’s new release clause next summer.
The RB Leipzig defender , who was heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford during the summer transfer window, will available for as little as £38million from the end of the 2020/21 campaign.
The France international is regarded as one of the most promising centre halves in Europe, with his current deal at the Bundesliga side running out in the summer of 2023.
And the Times claim Red Devils boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will ramp up his bid to sign the coveted defender next year.
Defensive reinforcements are now high on United’s agenda after conceding 12 goals in their first four Premier League matches, despite heavy investment in that position last summer.
Upamecano will come face-to-face with the Red Devils on Wednesday night as the two sides meet in the Champions League, with Solskajer expressing his admiration for the defender ahead of that clash.
“There’s always rumours and speculation about good players for Manchester United ,” Solskjaer said.
“I’ve always tried to respect they are players for other teams and don’t want to comment on every player we are linked to.
“But since he’s playing against us tomorrow, I know he’s a very good player and we can see him close up tomorrow.”
