How to mask up safely for Halloween fun
Oct 29, 2020
With Halloween just around the corner, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention ( CDC ) is recommending using Halloween-themed face masks that can pull double duty as part of a festive outfit while also protecting you from airborne germs and particles.
“If you’re planning to celebrate Halloween this year, consider getting a mask that gives you an instant costume while also helping to keep you safe,” said Dr. Marie Russell, chief medical officer for TrueCare of North County San Diego, formerly North County Health Services.
“Even if you’re choosing to attend an outdoor scavenger hunt or are staying home for a virtual Halloween costume contest, which is among the CDC’s low-risk Halloween ideas , these masks will help to keep you safe — and they may even spice up your costume or inspire this year’s theme.”
How To Choose A Mask
“When choosing a mask, it should be made of two or more layers of breathable fabric that covers the mouth and nose and doesn’t leave gaps,” Russell said.
The CDC discourages wearing regular Halloween masks rather than ones that can prevent the disease’s spread or wearing a cloth facial covering underneath a Halloween mask because it can be dangerous for breathing.
Non-disposable masks should be washed after every use to avoid contamination, and wearers should wash their hands before putting it on and after taking it off.
