Lewis Hamilton tests positive for coronavirus and will miss penultimate F1 Grand Prix in Sakhir
Dec 1, 2020
Lewis Hamilton will miss the penultimate F1 race of the season at the Sakhir Grand Prix after testing positive for coronavirus following his latest win in Bahrain.
The British motorsport star claimed his 11th victory of the season on Sunday in a race that was overshadowed by Romain Grosejean’s terrifying crash, dominating the course throughout.
That victory meant if he won the final two races of the season, in Sakhir and Abu Dhabi, he would tie Michael Schumacher and Sebastian Vettel’s all-time record for most GP wins (13) in a year.
However, Hamilton will be denied the opportunity to claim yet more Formula 1 history after testing positive for coronavirus, with the 35-year-old now required to self-isolate.
‘The Mercedes-AMG Petronas F1 Team regrets to announce that Lewis Hamilton has tested positive for COVID-19 and will be unable to take part in this weekend’s Sakhir GP,’ read a statement.
‘Lewis was tested three times last week and returned a negative result each time, the last of which was on Sunday afternoon at the Bahrain International Circuit as part of the standard race weekend testing programme.
‘However, he woke up on Monday morning with mild symptoms and was informed at the same time that a contact prior to arrival in Bahrain had subsequently tested positive.
‘Lewis therefore took a further test and returned a positive result. This has since been confirmed by a retest.
