The Basic Education Laws Amendment (BELA) Bill is again in the spotlight. This is after the portfolio committee on basic education in Parliament, embarked on a process of making amendments to the bill.
The bill is extensive with many amendments and additions to the original South African Schools Act of 1996.
Over the months, political parties and parents have been fervently sending out posts on social media either claiming discrepancies in the bill or praising it. There are many role players connected to the bill but don’t understand the contents of the bill fully, or the procedure that was followed to get the bill where it is now in Parliament.
With this in mind, the Nelson Mandela Community Youth Centre in Chatsworth is hosting an informative meeting, with a panel of esteemed panellists, who are extremely well-versed with the bill and with every clause added or removed.
The panellists are Mary Metcalfe, a former MEC for education, Hetta Muller from FEDSAS, James Ndlebe, national director of SGBs, and a few others.
Clive Pillay from the youth centre explained, “Over the months, I’ve seen lots of posts about the Bela Bill with a lot of fake information. The youth centre is hosting this informative meeting with a group of panellists with comprehensive knowledge of the bill. They would explain the contents of the bill and then take questions from the audience. This is an ideal informative session for parents, teachers, school governing bodies, and other interested individuals.”
