May 1, 2024
In Uganda, there' s a crocodile named Osama who became notorious for his deadly attacks on humans. This massive reptile, named after Osama bin Laden, gained infamy for his relentless assaults on unsuspecting villagers along the shores of Lake Victoria.
Osama' s reign of terror commenced in around 1990 continuing for over a decade. The crocodile lived in Africa' s largest Lake Victoria on the shores of Luganga Village in East Africa' s Uganda. It is reported to have been above 10 years old when it started terrorizing the unsuspecting Ugandans conducting business in the lake.
According to reports, Osama' s victims ranged from children to adults of all age. The 16 feet monster crocodile could wait for children who swam in the lake before pouncing on and dragging them underneath the water. It could also capsize boats with fishermen or travellers on board and feast on the victims who did not manage to swim away. By 2005, the crocodile had killed an estimate of 83 people accounting for ten percent of the population in Luganga village.
In 2005, the government partnered with locals to find a solution to this menace. A total of 50 men from the locality were hired to help in capturing the crocodile. A trap was set using beef as a bait. Osama fell for the trap and ended up being captured ending it' s reign of terror. The crocodile was sent to captivity to be used as a breeding stock for crocodiles in Korea and Spain. Some locals however felt that Osama got away too lightly as they desired it be killed.
