Nigeria Immigration Service speaks on expired passport
May 5, 2024
The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) late on Saturday night disclosed that there is nothing wrong for Nigerians who are travelling back into the country from abroad in using expired passports as long as their other travel documents are valid.
The Immigration disclosed this on its X handle while responding to the post by a citizen of the country who enquired if people can travel from the United Kingdom to Nigeria with an expired passport.
A Nigerian passport.
The man, whose X handle is @OgbeniDipo, disclosed in his post that he wanted to know on behalf of his friend about the possibility of travelling back to the country with an expired passport.
Below is the screenshot of his post on the issue:
Responding to the post however, the Immigration said a Nigerian living abroad with an expired passport should not be denied entry into his or her country so long as he or she has other valid travel requirements.
The Nigerian Immigration Service wrote: "Standard practice, especially as we constantly communicate with international airlines, states that a Nigerian with an expired passport should not be denied entry into his father/motherland (so long as he/she meets other relevant travel requirements). So to answer your question, sir, YES.
"However, certain airlines are quite big on ensuring that passengers who board their flights possess valid travel documents - inclusive of their international passports.
