The Story Of Bayajidda- The Heroic FOUNDER Of HAUSA States
Jun 4, 2024
The story of Bayajidda is one of the most significant legends among the Hausa people, shaping their perception of identity and common origin. The tale of this legendary figure is deeply intertwined with the cultural and historical fabric of Northern Nigeria.
Early Life And Origins
Bayajidda, originally named Abuyazid (popularly known as Abuyazidu), was born to Abdullah, the King of Baghdad. His early life remains shrouded in mystery, with limited information available about his origins. The name Bayajidda translates to " the father of Yazid, " indicating his paternal lineage.
According to the legend, Bayajidda fled Baghdad when Queen Zidam conquered the city. Accompanied by forty servants, he traveled through Lake Chad, entering present- day Nigeria via the town of Ngala, and eventually arrived in Gazargamu, now part of Borno State.
Bayajidda' s Occupation And Journey
Although the legend does not emphasize his occupation, it is understood that Bayajidda, like many royals of his time, enjoyed horse riding and hunting. His significant role came later when he assumed leadership in the city of Daurama, now known as Daura in Katsina State.
Arrival In Nigeria And The Conflict In Gazargamu
Upon arriving in Gazargamu, Bayajidda' s background in warfare and governance prompted him to challenge the incumbent king. The king, fearing Bayajidda' s superior forces, consulted with his high chiefs and advisors. To placate Bayajidda, the king offered his daughter, Magaram (also known as Magira), in marriage. This strategic marriage prevented Bayajidda from dethroning the king.
