Eventually, he transitioned into a life of crime, becoming a driver and transporter for criminal gangs and thieves.
Forming his own gang, including members like Monday Osunbor and Ofege, Anini initially focused on car hijacking, bus robberies, and bank thefts.
Over time, his criminal activities expanded to other towns and cities north and east of Benin.
Anini' s reign of terror in 1986 is believed to have been exacerbated by police complicity.
Early that year, two of his gang members were prosecuted against an informal agreement with the police to destroy evidence. Feeling betrayed, Anini retaliated with a series of violent crimes.
