Joshua Okayo, a Student Leader, Found Tortured Close to the Maragua River
Jun 29, 2024
Joshua Okayo, a Kenya School of Law student leader, has been found in Murang'a County, close to the Maragua River. This puts an end to the terrifying odyssey that started with his kidnapping last Wednesday. On Friday, June 28, the family and friends were relieved to learn of his rescue, capping two terrifying nights.
His rehabilitation came about as a result of strong pressure, from opposition leaders and human rights organizations, particularly Kalonzo Musyoka of the Wiper Party. When Okayo was discovered to be clearly weak, shaken, and suffering from torture, it caused a great deal of indignation and anxiety.
One of the first people to go to Okayo was his brother Fredrick Otieno, who confirmed that Joshua was in severe pain and needed emergency care.
"LSK President Faith Odhiambo verified in a statement that Joshua Okayo and another kidnapped person, Regis Wanjala, had been left behind at unidentified locations after their kidnappings. "We have confirmation that two people were abducted and left behind at undisclosed locations," she said.
Odhiambo revealed that Wanjala was recovered in a tea farm in Ruiru, while Okayo was found in Murang'a after being taken from his home in Rongai. "On Wednesday, Joshua Okayo was kidnapped from Rongai and left behind in Murang'a," she continued.
Both people are recuperating from the horrific event and are currently receiving medical attention. Okayo was taken immediately to Avenue Hospital in Thika, where he is now being closely monitored by medical professionals, who are especially concerned about the psychological damage he experienced.
