SERIOUS TENSION As President Tinubu Reportedly Sacks Popular Politician [See Reasons]
Jul 12, 2024
President Bola Tinubu has ordered the dismissal of Ahmed Halilu, the Managing Director of Nigerian Security Printing and Minting Plc (NSPM) and brother of former First Lady Aisha Buhari. Halilu was appointed by former President Muhammadu Buhari in September 2022.
Premium Times reported exclusively that four additional firm executives, Ado Danjuma, Chris Orewa, Tunji Kazeem, and Victoria Irabor, had also been fired. Victoria Irabor is married to Lucky Irabor, a former Chief of Defence Staff who allegedly protected former CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele from imprisonment in 2023.
Abubakar Minjibir, Executive Director of Operations (Abuja factory), has been asked to serve as Managing Director in the interim. The reason for the removal is unclear, although it follows special investigator Jim Obazee' s report on the CBN' s operations during the Buhari government.
The research underlined the NSPM' s role in Emefiele' s controversial currency reform scheme. Emefiele had contracted De La Rue to redesign the currency, resulting in a currency scarcity in the country.
The NSPM was therefore tasked with printing the revised money, but failed to do so adequately. According to the article, the firm shakeup could be tied to the ongoing inquiry into the currency reform policy and its effects.
