1990 Coup: I asked Mike Adenuga to jump into a gutter while Titus and I put our legs on him-Osiyemi
Aug 10, 2024
Prince Bayo Osiyemi, who served as the former Chief Press Secretary to the first civilian governor of Lagos State, Alhaji Lateef Jakande, has shared a story about how the CEO of Globacom Limited, Chief Mike Adenuga, was taken into exile during the military coup led by Major Gideon Orkar against the Gen. Ibrahim Babangida-led military administration on April 22, 1990.
According to The Nation, it was reported that in his upcoming memoir set for release in February next year to celebrate his 75th birthday, Osiyemi revealed that he and his friend, Titus Fapohunda, helped transport Chief Mike Adenuga out of the country immediately after the coup was announced because Babangida and Adenuga were good friends and he would be killed if Orkar's soldiers should get him.
He alleged they used a Volkswagen car known as Beetle because they were concerned that Adenuga could be targeted by the coup plotters due to his close relationship with the former military president.
Osiyemi claimed he learnt of the Orkar coup in the wee-hours, and his instinct told him he must reach out to Adenuga, so he called his late friend, Titus, who brought his Volkswagen to Adenuga's residence at Oko Awo Street, Victoria Island to a safe hiding place.
He said, “Mike Adenuga was ready for me by the time we arrived at his residence. Visibly shaken, he bundled his bulky frame and adapted himself into the back seat of the choky vehicle. We were to ferry him across the border for him to escape to London through Cotonou.
