Aug 10, 2024
A poignant scene unfolded on Saturday in Ibadan, Oyo State, as a septuagenarian woman participated in the ongoing one- million- man march, contributing her voice to the widespread national protest against poor governance in Nigeria. This march, which marks its tenth day of demonstrations, has seen citizens from various walks of life join in a collective call for change.
In the midst of the rally, the elderly woman, visibly distressed by the nation' s dire economic situation, addressed the crowd. Her remarks highlighted the severe impact of the current economic policies on ordinary citizens. She appealed directly to President Bola Tinubu, urging him to address the widespread hardship and hunger that has affected many Nigerians. Her words reflected the deep sense of frustration and desperation shared by many protesters: " We are not violent protesters. Help us to beg President Tinubu to have compassion on us. We are suffering from hunger, and his government has pushed many into extreme poverty. He should show us mercy and improve the administration. We are protesting peacefully, not aggressively. "
The march in Ibadan, which also featured many elderly participants, symbolized a broader push for reform and justice. Protesters carried various placards demanding improvements in governance and economic conditions, with chants and slogans underscoring their discontent with the current state of affairs. One prominent message read, " The elders are out to express their grievances. We are not backing down from our quest for a better future. "
