The world's most expensive road, a remarkable infrastructure project, is located in East Africa, specifically in Uganda. This road, known as the Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, has gained global attention due to its staggering cost of construction, which significantly outpaces typical road construction expenses.

The Kampala-Entebbe Expressway, stretching approximately 51.4 kilometers (about 32 miles), connects Uganda’s capital city, Kampala, to Entebbe International Airport, the country’s main gateway to the world. This road was designed to ease traffic congestion between the two important hubs and to support the growing demand for efficient transport infrastructure in Uganda. The expressway has greatly reduced travel time between Kampala and Entebbe, from over two hours during peak times to about 30-40 minutes, making it a critical artery for both locals and international visitors.

What makes this road stand out is its cost—an astounding $476 million, translating to approximately $9.3 million per kilometer. This makes it one of the most expensive roads per kilometer globally. The high cost can be attributed to several factors, including the challenging terrain, the need for modern construction technology, and the funding structure. The project was funded largely through a loan from the Export-Import Bank of China, and the construction was undertaken by China Communications Construction Company (CCCC), a prominent Chinese infrastructure firm.
