Samia Yaba Nkrumah is a popular Ghanaian politician and former chairperson of the Convention People’s Party making her the first woman to ever head a major political party in Ghana.

In the year 2008 parliamentary election, she won the Jomoro constituency seat at her first attempt.

In Ghanaian politics, Samia Yaba Nkrumah, the daughter of Kwame Nkrumah, the country’s first president, has forged her own route.

She was born in 1960 and, after the coup in 1966, was sent into exile with her family. She grew up in Egypt with a strong sense of social justice and a dedication to her father’s principles.

Nkrumah began his career as a journalist in Egypt, working for Al-Ahram. Following her return to Ghana, she entered politics and rose to the position of chair of her father’s party, the Convention People’s Party (CPP).

She became history in 2008 when she was elected to a legislative seat as the first female CPP MP. Nkrumah is still well-known in Ghanaian politics despite her struggles, having fought for social justice, economic empowerment, and the carrying on of her father’s legacy.
