Royal Showdown: Offinso Queen Mother Challenges Enstoolment of New Chief in Heated Legal Battle
Sep 11, 2024
The Offinso Traditional Area in the Ashanti Region is facing a serious legal issue after the enstoolment (installation) of a new chief, Nana Kwaku Amoako Poku, also known as Nana Dwamena Akenten II. This event has caused disagreement within the community, as some say the proper steps were not followed during the process.
The Queen Mother of Offinso, Nana Ama Serwaa Nyarko, has taken the matter to the Judicial Committee of the Ashanti Regional House of Chiefs. She has asked them to cancel the installation of Nana Amoako Poku because she believes it was done in the wrong way, going against traditional customs and legal rules.
The Queen Mother's Complaint
According to the Queen Mother, she never chose Nana Amoako Poku to be the next Offinsohene (chief). In the traditions of the Offinso people, the Queen Mother plays a very important role in selecting the next chief. She claims that she had chosen Dr. Kofi Koduah Sarpong, who was also accepted by the Kingmakers (a group of elders who help choose the chief). However, despite her choice, Nana Amoako Poku was installed as chief.
The Queen Mother says that Nana Amoako Poku's enstoolment was “a clear breach of the established customs.” Since she did not choose him, the entire process, she argues, is not valid, and his claim to the stool (the position of the chief) is illegal. She believes this breaks the long-held customs of the Offinso people.
