Kisii University Lectures Strike Calling Cabinet Secretary of Education To Review Their Agreement
Sep 18, 2024
Lecturers at Kisii University have downed their tools, calling upon the Cabinet Secretary (CS) of Education, mr. Julius migos ogamba, to review the 2021–2025 Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
The agreement binds the employers and the teachers' union in universities. It covers working hours, wages, salaries, benefits, and the social welfare of union members.
Speaking to the media, they called on the cabinet secretary of Education to review the terms and conditions of the agreement.
Recently, they issued a strike notice, led by the University Academic Staff Union (UASU) and the Kenya Universities Staff Union (KUSU), affecting universities countrywide. The strike was set to begin on the 18th of this month.
The workers had been complaining about the adjustment of salaries and wages.
This comes amid the government’s recent adjustment of civil workers' salaries countrywide.
This adjustment of salaries affected some groups, as university staff felt left out by the government's salary changes.
According to the recent pay rise, those earning from Ksh 19,220, saw an increase to Ksh 20,560, while higher job groups earning around Ksh 102,860 received a pay rise of Ksh 3,000, bringing their total to Ksh 105,570.
