Lucky Dube started making music at a young age. Before turning to reggae in 1984, he made records in Zulu and Afrikaans, influenced by Peter Tosh. He became South Africa's most well-known reggae artist. After meeting Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, he switched to reggae and released the hit album "Prisoner", which topped the charts in South Africa in the 1980s and 1990s.
His album "Serious Reggae Business" was also a huge success in Ghana. Dube won over 20 awards locally and internationally. He spent his life touring and performing. Tragically, he was shot and killed in a Johannesburg neighborhood in 2007, at the age of 43. It appeared to be a carjacking gone wrong.
Five men were arrested in connection with his death, and three were found guilty in 2009. The attackers claimed they shot Dube because they thought he was Nigerian and didn't recognize him as a famous reggae artist. According to the police, three men shot Dube while he was dropping off his children at school in Rosettenville.
A state witness, Mpho Maruping, testified that her husband had confessed to being involved in the attempted hijacking and told her what happened to Dube. The court heard that Dube's family was present and visibly distraught during the testimony. Maruping's husband, Thabo, was initially accused of the crime but later turned state's witness.
