Renaming of Tamale International Airport to Proceed Despite Yaa Naa Disagreement

Barring any Unforeseen circumstances, the renaming of Tamale International Airport is set to go ahead in the coming days. The airport will be renamed Yakubu Tali International Airport in honor of Yakubu Tali, a First Republic politician and chief of the Tolon Traditional Area in the Northern Region.
During a visit to the Tolon Chief Palace on Friday, the Member of Parliament (MP) for Tolon, Hon. Habib Iddrisu, announced that all ground works have been concluded and the faility from next week will be called Yakubu Tali International Airport.
"All the background work has been completed, and we expect the airport to officially be named Yakubu Tali International Airport by next week," the MP said.
The lawmaker informed the Chief of Tolon, Major (RTD) Sulemana Abukari, that aviation authorities are finalizing the necessary documentation for the name change to be reflected in the global aviation system.
When effected, Hon. Habib, said the renaming to solidify the legacy of Naa Yakubu Tali as both a political and traditional leader, though the issue remains a subject of local debate.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo during the State of the Nation Address in February, revealed plans to rename both Kumasi and Tamale Airports after having upgraded them international status. The President revealed then that the Kumasi Airport was to be renamed after the Asante King Prempeh, and Tamale Airport after Yakubu Tali.
