Meet President Ruto's Little Known Father Who was A Peasant Farmer
Oct 2, 2024
William Ruto, Kenya's President, rose from humble beginnings in Sambut village, Uasin Gishu County. His father, Mzee Daniel Cheruiyot, was a peasant farmer whose determination and values significantly influenced Ruto's upbringing.
Despite the hardships, Ruto’s parents instilled strict Christian principles in him, and they never hesitated to discipline him when needed.
Ruto himself has often recalled walking to school barefoot and herding goats after classes, experiences that shaped his resilience and work ethic.
Mzee Daniel Cheruiyot began his life as a small-scale farmer but steadily grew his farming ventures. He owned a herd of cows that supplied milk to the Kenya Cooperative Creameries (KCC) and also produced large quantities of maize, which he sold to the National Cereals and Produce Board.
His hard work and commitment enabled him to provide for his family, ensuring that his children, including William Ruto, had access to education. Later in life, his children uplifted him, recognizing his sacrifices for their future.
Unfortunately, Mzee Cheruiyot passed away in 2008, while Ruto was serving as the Member of Parliament for Eldoret North.
His father’s legacy lives on through the values and determination that Ruto embodies today as Kenya’s President.
