45.9M People: Uganda’s Population Growth Rate Drops to 2.3%
Oct 4, 2024
Uganda’s population has surged to 45.9 million, an increase of 10 million people since the 2014 census.
This is according to results of the 2024 National Population and Housing Census (NPHC) conducted in May, 2024 by the Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS).
However, the results show a drop in the population growth rate – from 3.0 percent to 2.3 percent.
The 2014 Census revealed a total population of 34.9 million, an increase of 10.7 million from the 24.2 million given by the 2002 Census.
Experts say the reduction in the population growth rate despite a 4.5% fertility rate implies the society is becoming more sensitive to the financial requirements of raising many children.
The fear of losing children to killer diseases such as tetanus and polio has substantially reduced due to immunisation and better health services in many parts of the country.
The report highlighted other significant statistics, including a literacy rate of 74%, a fertility rate of 4.5%, and life expectancy at birth of 68.5 years.
The unemployment rate stood at 12.6%, with youth aged 18-30 comprising 23.5% of the population.
Children under 17 years made up 50% of the population, while older persons represented 5%.
Religion
Religious affiliations revealed that eight out of 10 Ugandans are Christians, with Catholics forming 37.4% of the population, followed by Anglicans at 30%, and Pentecostals at 14.7%.
