Oct 24, 2024
The name Thabo Mbeki is a household name across the globe. Aside from being South Africa's second president, he is also well-known for his efforts in rallying students in London to protest against the unlawful detention of political activists in South Africa and championing for the end of the apartheid regime.
Thabo Mbeki is South Africa's second resident and is considered one of Africa's outstanding leaders. His term as president is a topic of mixed emotions, some praising it and others choosing to criticize it. Serving under the ANC from 1999, he resigned in 2008 with just nine months left in his tenure.
Thabo Mbeki is currently married to Zanele Mbeki whom he married on 23 November 1974. This year they will be creating their 47 years anniversary. However, they have no children together. Thabo Mbeki only has one son, Monwabisi Kwanda Mbeki, whom he had with his baby mama Olive Mpahlwa when he was only 16 years old.
In 1976, Kwanda went into exile with one of his father's old comrades Phindile Mfeti. He heard from Phindile that his father was in exile in Swaziland and decided to join him. Former president Thabo Mbeki's son voice was heard for the last time over a phone call when he told his father's friend that he was in Durban.
In 1998, both Kwanda's parents spoke at the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC), and found that the last place their son was seen alive was at the ANC military base in Tanzania. It was assumed that both Thabo Mbeki's son and his friend Phindile Mfeti were killed by the Apartheid government forces.
