PURC Recovers GH¢11.4 Million From ECG Debtors Between January And September 2024
Oct 24, 2024
According to a report from Ghana Times. The Public Utilities Regulatory Commission (PURC) has successfully recovered a substantial sum of GH¢11,441,875.55 owed to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) by consumers over the first nine months of 2024. This achievement was revealed by Mrs. Gifty Bruce-Nelson, the Greater Accra Regional Manager of the PURC, during a workshop in Accra.
The recovery effort was initiated in response to complaints raised by ECG regarding unpaid consumer bills. Mrs. Bruce-Nelson highlighted that the PURC intervened after ECG lodged these concerns, ensuring that outstanding debts from consumers were effectively addressed. These efforts have played a critical role in improving ECG's financial health by reducing the number of unpaid bills.
The announcement was made during a training session organized for Assembly members and Unit Committee members in the Greater Accra Region. The event aimed to engage and educate participants on the operations of the PURC, with a focus on improving consumer understanding of their obligations and rights when it comes to utility services.
The workshop, which brought together 50 representatives from the Agbogba electoral area and the Ga East Municipality, served as a platform for community leaders to learn more about the regulatory functions of the PURC. Mrs. Bruce-Nelson emphasized that part of PURC's mandate is to ensure that utilities are provided efficiently and that consumers comply with the regulations surrounding the payment of their utility bills.
