Doctor says to check for vitamin deficiency if you're going grey early
Oct 30, 2024

The expert shared contributing factors that could be behind premature hair greying, including possible vitamin deficiencies

A doctor has revealed vitamin deficiencies could be to blame if your hair is turning grey sooner than you'd expect. Dr Joe Whittington, who posts on social media as Dr Joe MD (@drjoe_md), shared the advice in a video on his popular TikTok account.
"If you're going grey in your 20s or early 30s, you may have premature hair greying," he said. "Although genetics likely plays the biggest role in premature hair greying, there are other contributing factors."
As the expert explained, vitamin deficiencies could be one of these contributing factors. Listing factors, he said: "Number one, vitamin deficiencies, especially B12 and D. So make sure to get your levels checked and supplement as necessary."
Dr Joe said chronic stress could also be behind premature greying. He added: "Chronic stress wreaks havoc on hair colour. So make sure you have an exercise and meditation programme in your routine to help offset these."
Next, he listed sun damage, explaining: "Sun damage can damage pigment and therefore make sure you wear a hat or have some other UV protectant hair products." He added: "Oxidative stress, usually from a poor diet and ageing over time. Now, what you can do to offset this is a diet rich in antioxidants, especially vitamin C and vitamin E."
