How Botswana's New First Lady Kaone Boko Wins the Hearts of Voters with Grace and Resilience
Nov 5, 2024
Botswana ushered in a new era as Kaone Boko stepped into her role as First Lady following the inauguration of her husband, Duma Boko, who was officially sworn in as the country’s sixth president by Chief Justice Terrence Rannowane on Sunday.
The inauguration was a moment of pride and joy for Kaone, who was visibly emotional as she watched her husband take the presidential oath. Married since 2015, Kaone is a highly accomplished lawyer with a successful career both in the law firm she shares with her husband and in his political campaigns. She has also been an outspoken advocate for tackling key national challenges, including unemployment and the need for economic diversification.
Her leadership and commitment to these causes have earned her deep respect and admiration across Botswana. Many voters have expressed appreciation for her strength and dedication, particularly in her support of her husband’s journey to the presidency.
On Facebook, Umile Gwakuba praised Kaone’s quiet yet powerful presence, describing her as “the true mofokodi”—a term meaning steadfast partner—who has supported her husband through both personal and political challenges. Gwakuba wrote: “I am drawn to the grace she wears, the quiet fire that shapes her soul, the steadfast strength of Duma Gideon Boko’s wife.”
Phila Delphia-Kenneth also recognized the sacrifices Kaone has made, commenting on the challenges of balancing her personal and professional life, particularly in the public eye: “I can imagine your late nights, the constant stream of people intruding on your home for party business. It’s your time now, be a mother. You've been behind the scenes, but now you are in the open.”
