How to Turn Off a Vehicle with Diesel Engine Runaway
Nov 5, 2024
Diesel engine runaway is a serious and dangerous problem. It happens when a diesel engine keeps running out of control, even when you try to turn it off. The engine keeps getting fuel from an unwanted source, like leaking oil and revs faster and faster. Knowing how to stop a runaway engine quickly can help prevent damage to the vehicle and keep everyone safe. Here are some ways to turn off a runaway diesel engine:
1. Block the Air Intake
The easiest and safest way to stop a runaway diesel engine is to cut off its air supply. Diesel engines need air to run, so blocking the air intake will stop the engine.
Use a Thick Cloth: If you have a thick piece of fabric or a towel, try to place it over the engine' s air intake. This should block the air from entering the engine, causing it to shut off.
Be Careful: Remember to be very careful when getting close to the engine, as it will be extremely loud and may be vibrating heavily.
2. Use a CO2 Fire Extinguisher
Another method to stop a runaway diesel engine is to use a carbon dioxide (CO2) fire extinguisher.
Spray into the Air Intake: Direct the CO2 into the air intake of the engine. The carbon dioxide will replace the oxygen the engine needs, causing it to shut down.
Use CO2, Not Water: Only use a CO2 extinguisher. Never use a water or foam extinguisher, as they won' t stop the engine and may cause more damage.
