KT Hammond trending for the wrong reasons after clashing with NDC MPs in Parliament
Nov 7, 2024
The longstanding dispute over majority control in Ghana’s Parliament erupted again on Thursday, November 7, 2024, as New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP for Adansi Asokwa, Kobina Tahir (KT) Hammond, was captured in a heated confrontation with National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs. The altercation, which occurred near the Grand Arena at the Accra International Conference Centre, has drawn significant attention after footage circulated on social media platform X, showing Hammond exchanging intense words with NDC representatives, including MP James Klutse Avedzi of Ketu North.
The dispute flared up shortly after Speaker Alban Bagbin indefinitely adjourned parliamentary proceedings, following a boycott by NPP MPs over the contentious vacant seat issue. Hammond’s confrontation with NDC members symbolizes the increasing frustration and animosity between the two factions, stemming from the recent Supreme Court intervention that temporarily stayed Speaker Bagbin’s declaration of four seats as vacant. These seats, held by MPs Cynthia Morrison (Agona West), Kwadjo Asante (Suhum), Andrew Amoako Asiamah (Fomena), and Peter Kwakye Ackah (Amenfi Central), were contested after the incumbents filed to run in the December 7, 2024 elections as either independents or under different party tickets, a move that diverges from their original NPP affiliations.
